Paddle for a Purpose
Again this year, the Fanshawe Dragon Boat Festival proudly supports London Health Sciences Foundation. Funds raised from this event will support the Massel Cruickshank Patient Assistance Fund, helping support women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The Massel Cruickshank Patient Assistance Fund is the first fund of its kind in Ontario to help breast cancer patients with expenses related to treatment, such as wigs and prostheses. In 2004, Moira Cruickshank, a physician at Western University and LHSC, was undergoing treatment for breast cancer and came to realize that there were serious gaps in financial support for women in treatment. Things like having coverage for medications, wigs, and other cancer-related costs might temporarily make someone’s journey a little brighter if only the costs didn’t have to come out of pocket. She started the Massel-Cruickshank fund to raise money specifically for that purpose – she wanted to help other breast cancer patients receive support to help them through their journey.
